Trama del film: Katie e Micah sono una giovane coppia, da poco trasferitasi in un appartamento suburbano, che inzia ad essere disturbata da qualcosa nel bel mezzo della notte. Qualcosa che potrebbe essere paranormale. Un esperto del settore viene consultato, e gli rivela che quello che li tormenta non è un semplice fantasma, ma un demone che si ciba di energie negative. Micah decide allora di piazzare una videocamera nella loro stanza da letto per vedere quello che accade mentre dormono, scoprendo realtà inquietanti.
Una buona idea, un titolo semplice ed efficace, 15.000 dollari (poco più di 10.000 euro), un’abile campagna di marketing virale e una buona dose di fortuna: questa la ricetta vincente di Paranormal Activity, film no budget del debuttante Oren Peli che ha incassato oltre 100 milioni di dollari ai botteghini americani. Replicando la ricetta di The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity è un film realizzato in casa (letteralmente, in casa del regista) la cui componente essenziale è il non visto, e il cui punto di forza è la convincente performance di due sconosciuti attori che devono trasmettere al pubblico la loro paura. L’idea più bella di questo film è quella di puntare la telecamera sul momento più indifeso e ignaro della vita di una persona: il sonno. E le scene delle notti dei due ragazzi nella casa infestata sono effettivamente le più efficaci. Le lenzuola si muovono, si odono strani rumori, le ombre si addensano, o forse è soltanto la nostra immaginazione. La casa diventa un bozzolo mortale isolato dal mondo, in cui gli altri penetrano brevemente solo alla luce diurna lasciando i due prigionieri della notte e del misterioso persecutore della ragazza. Se Paranormal Activity in qualche cosa delude, è proprio nell’aspettativa che tenta di creare e che si concretizza in un’unica bella sequenza (che non riveliamo). Un po’ poco per una tensione che dovrebbe crescere fino a diventare insopportabile e invece a un certo punto induce lo spettatore a chiedersi perché, anche se non serve a niente, i due non se ne vadano di corsa dalla casa – l’impianto del film dopotutto è realistico, e il girato è presentato senza titoli, come un documento – e continuino a dormire sogni spezzati e incubi nella camera maledetta. Insomma, la sospensione dell’incredulità a un certo punto cede alla logica, e questo non è un buon segno. Le immagini degli spettatori che gridano e sobbalzano montate nel trailer sono più una dimostrazione sociologica della voglia di paura pura del pubblico americano (non abituato alla raffinatezza e succube degli effetti speciali), che un tributo all’effettiva capacità del film di incutere terrore. Va dato però atto ad Oren Peli di aver fatto un film sul demoniaco spogliandolo delle sovrastrutture del cinema del passato e riportandolo alla sua struttura grezza. Anche se i riferimenti ad altri film, dall’immancabile L’Esorcista a Entity, fino allo stesso Blair Witch Project, sono troppo evidenti, quando ad esempio quest’ultimo si rifaceva solo a se stesso. Questo va probabilmente ascritto al fatto che il regista è un autodidatta, che di tutt’altre cose si occupava per lavoro (software per computer) e che nei confronti del cinema ha l’approccio di un qualsiasi fan che deve rendere omaggio alle sue fonti. Ma con tutti i dovuti distinguo e senza gridare al miracolo, Paranormal Activity è comunque un esperimento interessante che riporta il cinema dell’orrore a una dimensione minimale, dove la paura è quasi sempre fuori campo, nella mente di chi guarda e costruisce il suo mostro personale, e non nell’obiettivo che tutto rivela, con la pretesa di spaventarci tutti allo stesso modo. ragno.lc

Replicating the recipe for The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity is a film made in the house (literally, house of the director) whose key component is the unseen, and whose strong point is the convincing performance of two unknown actors who must convey to the public their fear. The idea of this film is more beautiful than pointing the camera at the moment most defenseless and unaware of the life of a person sleep. And the scenes of the nights of the two boys in the haunted house are actually the most effective. The sheets are moving, you hear strange noises, shadows are gathering, or maybe it’s just our imagination. The home becomes a cocoon isolated from the mortal world, where others only in daylight penetrates briefly leaving the two prisoners of the night and persecutor of the mysterious girl. If Paranormal Activity in something disappoints, it is precisely in the expectation that tries to create and that results in one beautiful sequence (which does not reveal). A little ‘little to a voltage that is expected to grow until it became unbearable at one point and instead makes the viewer wonder why, if not useless, the two did not go running from the house – the floor of the film after all, is realistic, and the footage is presented without titles, as a document – and continue to sleep broken dreams and nightmares in the cursed room. In short, the suspension of disbelief at some point yield to logic, and this is not a good sign. The images of the audience screaming and bouncing in the trailer are mounted a demonstration of the desire to sociological pure fear of the American public (not used to the sophistication and dominated special effects), a tribute to the effective capacity of film to inspire terror. Credit is due, however, to note Oren Peli’ve made a film about demonic stripping of the superstructure of the cinema of the past and bringing it back to its rough texture.
