Incredibile ma vero! Con un fare diabolico sono riuscita, con abilità da ladra degna di May Frayn , a introfularmi nel magico palazzo in via Buonarroti a Milano! Entrando nel suo ufficio, ho avuto modo di fare una bella chiacchierata con il leader del mercato italiano del fumetto : SERGIO BONELLI !

Inizio con una piccola domanda trabocchetto.Lei è passato dai personaggi eterni alle miniserie, questo vuol dire che il mercato ha piegato anche la Sergio Bonelli Editore? “ Ti stupirò, ma non è così: sono gli autori a frenare, non io. La miniserie è meno rischiosa per me, certo, ma spesso la trovo un alibi: se hai tra le mani un personaggio “a tempo indeterminato”, che fai, ti risparmi? Io lavoro qui dal 1957, accetto le scommesse. Dicono che non sbaglio mai, la verità è che quando lo faccio nessuno dice niente: il mio mestiere è prendere dei rischi, e non addossarli a chi lavora per me. Però sono anche un pigro: quando azzecco il personaggio giusto, mi piacerebbe adagiarmi. Così invece lo stress è continuo, ma se l’autore non è convinto, posso mai spingere io sull’acceleratore? Questa prudenza, però, la capisco: in questo paese ci sono pochi editori mentre disegnatori e autori sono sempre più bravi, la società dell’immagine li cresce in fretta e sono molto capaci anche quelli che escono dalle scuole di fumetto. Non dobbiamo più girare il mondo per cercare artisti, li troviamo sulla nostra scrivania. E purtroppo spesso non possiamo penderli.”

Da Demian a Volto nascosto, questo modello ha rinvigorito il fumetto. “Volto nascosto lo amo molto: parla di guerre dimenticate e di serie B, di vicende coloniali ignorate dagli italiani, perché confuse e non belle da ricordare. Qui la Storia, con le sue date, impedisce di andare avanti all’infinito. Ma , per esempio, i francesi non sono andati avanti con Jean Gabin per anni? Forse anche il nostro marsigliese Demian poteva farlo. Lo speciale non è lo stesso, noi lettori di fumetti amiamo la delizia- stillicidio della periodicità precisa:persino la bimestralità ci fa soffrire. Io sono il primo lettore, non mi sento mai l’editore onnisciente. E tanti risultati felici, per fortuna, ci permettono di sopportare qualche flop. Odiamo l’”usa e getta”, preferiamo accettare i fallimenti.”

 Spesso gli albi Bonelli sono molto strumentalizzati politicamente. Tex icona della destra, Dylan Dog e Nathan Never della sinistra. “Una cosa inevitabile: se ora sfogliamo tutti i Tex, a ogni pagina tu dirai destra e io sinistra, o viceversa. E un altro centro. E’ così da almeno 30 anni, noi facciamo storie, non politica: papà ( Gian Luigi Bonelli, co-creatore di Tex), se faceva un banchiere ladro, era perché gli serviva. Ricordo una storia di Tex in Canada in cui alcuni vedevano nei ribelli le Brigate Rosse, altri i poliziotti, spesso dipende da chi legge e non da chi scrive. E dalla ripetitività della Storia. Le guerre hanno la pessima abitudine di somigliarsi tutte, così come le dinamiche sociali e politiche. Ma detto tra noi, leggendo Nathan Never o le nostre serie, non ho mai scoperto per chi votano i nostri autori. Vero è che in tutti c’è un sentire comune pacifista.”

Vedo albi di tutti i tipi in ufficio. Leggete tutto, anche il fumetto indipendente? “Certo, noi andavamo alle ferie – senza compare nulla perché producevamo tutto qua – per curiosità, per fiutare l’aria. E ora compriamo tutto quello che esce, ci piace vedere cosa fanno gli altri anche per imparare eventualmente. Enoch, che ora scrive e disegna per noi, l’ho scoperto su Sprayliz, splendido. “

 Il segreto del vostro successo? “Io sono riconoscente al destino che mi ha aiutato anche nei momenti difficili e a quel pubblico che ci ha voluto bene. Anche ora che sono un terzo o un quarto rispetto a prima, rimangono una buona trincea che non ci ha fatto subire il tracollo francese o spagnolo. Non è solo merito nostro, quindi, ma anche dei nostri lettori. E della nostra bottega che sa essere industria.”

E ora cosa ci aspetta? “Cosa farò da grande? (ride, è un coriaceo e vivace classe 1932 ). Io sono un editore che scommette come al casinò, senza però mettere in pericolo l’esistenza della casa editrice o la mia. Punto sui giovani e su chi lavora con me da tanto e proficuamente, magari gli do una seconda possibilità: e così dopo caravan, è arrivato Greystron di Antonio Serra, tra i creatori di Nathan Never e Legs Weaver, ma anche del fiasco Gregory Hunter, così come Ambrosini l’ha avuta con Jan Dix. Se avessi dovuto fare conti bene, il suo Napoleone … Ma mi piaceva e facevo finta di nulla. Poi ci sarà la seconda stagione di Volto nascosto, ai tempi della Rivolta dei Boxer in Cina, nel 1900. E Ruju farà 18 numeri di un’altra miniserie ambientata nell’America degli anni ’60 ‘ 70.”

Ha ragione chi dice che il fumetto non è più cultura di serie B? “Era meglio prima, quando nessuno parlava di noi, quando mia mamma un po’ si vergognava del nostro lavoro, si vendeva molto di più. Ora mi venite a intervistare, tutti parlano di noi, ma va peggio. Nessuno ci recensisce seriamente, al 90% veniamo ancora considerati … folkloristici. Lo sdoganamento, la rivalutazione è avvenuta con poca convinzione, e così lo snobbismo è rimasto. Ma almeno ora non ci accusano di istigare all’omicidio o di essere degli ignoranti!”. ESP
