“The Miseducation of L. H.”,disco largamente autobiografico, il titolo è derivato da un libro dal titolo The Miseducation of the Negro di Carter G. Woodson e dal film del 1974 The Education of Sonny Carson. La rivista Rolling Stone ha inserito l’album nella lista dei 500 miglior album di tutti i tempi. L’album ha fatto scuola per intuizioni geniali, rispetto della tradizione black e grande personalità. La donna dei Grammy Awards aveva una grande pressione ed eredità sulle sue fragili spalle ovvero il progetto Fugees che creò un masterpiece “The Score” per l’intera cultura musicale afroamericana e non solo, perciò la Hill non poteva permettersi di fare errori. Nel ‘98 non delude le aspettative con un disco interamente scritto, prodotto e arrangiato da lei e fa mangiare polvere agli altri “rifugiati” Wyclef Jean e Pras Michel anch’essi usciti con album solisti. Da mettere vicino ai capolavori dei grandi maestri (Wonder, Gaye, Franklin ecc) “The Miseducation of. . ” è senza dubbio un concept-album che va ad esplorare un po’ tutti i generi della Black Music: per esempio l’iniziale “Lost Ones”, “Final Hour”, “Everything Is Everything” e il primo singolo “Doo Wop (That Thing)” sono di pura ispirazione Hip-Hop dove le liriche sono taglienti e pronunciate con fermezza da vera predicatrice. Come ogni disco black che si rispetti non mancano i famosi “featuring”, artisti che la Hill sceglie con grande criterio e professionalità e non perchè sono alti nella Billboard Chart: Santana arricchisce un pezzo come “To Zion” che Lauryn dedica alla figlia, Mary J Blige dimostra di non esserle inferiore per quanto riguarda l’interpretazione di “I Used To Love Him”, lo slancio Raggae di “Forgive Them Father” vede la partecipazione di Shelly Thunder per interpretare insieme “Concrete Jungle” di B. Marley e l’intensissimo D’Angelo si cimenta nella supersoul “Nothing Even Matters”. Esempi di R’n'B contemporaneo li abbiamo in perle come “When It Hurts So Bad” e la cover di “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” che per la prima volta non suona come una canzone da carnevale di Viareggio. I pezzi chiave dell’album, quelli più profondi e toccanti e più congeniali alla sua voce sono senza dubbio le tracce Soul come “Ex-Factor”, la ghost track “Tell Him” e “The Miseducation Of L. H. ” che ce la fa sentire come suonerebbe se fosse stata incisa su vinile quasi fosse amareggiata di averla pubblicata su cd. Geniale l’intuizione di inserire tra un brano e l’altro degli interludi in cui si sente la quotidianità di un’aula di scuola americana dove un maestro interroga gli alunni sul senso della vita e dell’amore. Alla fine del semestre Lauryn Hill supererà gli esami a pieni voti anche se gli verrà data una nota di demerito per avere deturpato il banco dell’aula con il suo autoritratto (vedi copertina).+
