Tre premi (miglior video “Single Ladies – Put A Ring On It”, miglior canzone “Halo” e miglior artista femminile) per Beyoncé che ha stregato gli MTV Europe Music Awards 2009, a Berlino per il ventennale dalla caduta del Muro. Delusa Lady Gaga che con 5 monination ed è stata premiata come Migliore rivelazione dell’anno. Gli U2 si sono esibiti alla porta di Brandeburgo con 10mila fan e hanno conquistato il premio per la Migliore esibizione live. Delusa anche Shakira che era candidata in due categorie per “She Wolf”. I tedeschi Tokio Hotel, gruppo-cult degli adolescenti di tutto il mondo, hanno vinto nella categoria miglior gruppo. Mentre Eminem ha conquistato la categoria di migliore artista maschile. Da segnalare l’affermazione di Pixie Lott che ha vinto come “Miglior artista emergente inglese e irlandese” e anche come “Miglior Artista del Network”. “Miglior artista emergente Europeo” i turchi maNga che hanno battuto così anche i Lost. Emozioni per il concerto degli U2 di fronte alla porta di  Brandeburgo, uno show solo in parte riproposto durante la diretta dell’evento di Mtv e conclusa dal duetto tra gli U2 e Jay-Z in “Sunday Bloody Sunday” con una citazione di “Get Up Stand Up” di Bob Marley. L’intero frontone della porta è stato sovrastato dalla scritta luminosa “One Love” intervallata da un enorme cuore rosso. Bono e soci hanno emozionato con “One Love”, “Magnificent”, “Beautiful Day” e “Vertigo”. Polemiche riguardo alla recinzione con cui, di fronte alla porta di Brandeburgo è stata delimitata l’area che ospitava i 10 mila ragazzi che hanno partecipato a un concorso internet. Mtv International dichiara, rispondendo a chi ha definito quella recinzione “un nuovo muro”, che “Mtv ha sempre operato per mettere in sicurezza il pubblico delle proprie manifestazioni e che mai c’è stata l’intenzione di costruire un muro, ma al contrario di creare, d’accordo con le autorità e gli organizzatori locali, le condizioni per un grande evento di musica”.
Grandi performance sul palco con le regine della musica mondiale: Beyoncé con una guepiere rossa e molto sexy ha intonato “Sweet Dreams”, Shakira ha riproposto le atmosfere del suo ultimo video “Did It Again” e Leona Lewis ha strappato qualche lacrima con la ballad “Happy”. Hanno aperto la serata i Green Day con “Know Your Enemy” (che hanno conquistato la categoria Best Rock) e Katy Perry ha scaldato lo show proponendosi sul palco in un look stile Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret” e cantando un mega medley con le migliori canzoni candidate agli MTV Europe Music Awards: “I Gotta Feeling” – Black Eyed Peas; “When Love Takes Over” – David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland; “Use Somebody” – Kings of Leon; “Halo” – Beyonce e “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga. I Tokio Hotel hanno suonato con una spettacolare scenografia e le fiamme sul palcoscenico. Suggestive le immagini scelte per la performance di Jay-Z (che ha vinto il premio come Best Urban) inserito nello Sky Line di New York. Tra le varie esibizioni c’è stato spazio anche per un omaggio a Michael Jackson, presentato dai Jonas Brothers, al quale è stato assegnato il Legend Awards con un video celebrativo con ragazzi, scelti per strada, che cantavano alcuni suoi successi. Lunga la lista dei premiatori con Asia Argento, Backstreet Boys, Jean Reno, Juliette Lewis, la super model Bar Refaeli, David Hasselhoff, l’ex star di “Baywatch” che in Germania è una star ed è apparso molto su di giri.
