E’ morto Michael Jackson. Il cantante americano, 50 anni, è stato colto da un malore mentre si trovava nella sua residenza di Holmby Hills, sulle colline di Los Angeles. I soccorritori hanno riferito che, al loro arrivo, “non respirava più”. E’ stato portato d’urgenza all’ospedale dell’ Ucla (Università di California a Los Angeles). Per un’ora circa, c’è stata incertezza sulla sua sorte. Alcuni siti lo davano per morto, altri dicevano che era in coma. Poi, la notizia del decesso si è fatta sempre più sicura e una folla di “fan” ha cominciato ad accalcarsi davanti all’ospedale. Il fratello di Jackson, Ransy, ha riferito che Michael è collassato all’improvviso in casa. E’ stata subito chiamata l’ambulanza, ma non è stato precisato quanto tempo sia passato dal momento in cui Jackson è stato colto da malore al momento in cui gli è stato effettuato il massaggio cardiaco. I paramedici hanno continuato nel tentativo di rianimazione anche al di fuori della villa del cantante. L’ipotesi più accreditata in questo momento è quella dell’infarto, anche se non ci sono conferme da parte dell’ospedale. Nel luglio dello scorso anno le foto del cantante su una sedia a rotelle, in pigiama, con una mascherina sulla bocca. Risale a tre mesi fa l’ultima conferenza stampa dell’artista, organizzata per annunciare una serie di concerti a Londra. In quell’occasione, Jackson aveva detto che il mini-tour sarebbe stato “la mia ultima chiamata sul palco”. Le date degli spettacoli erano poi slittate.

Dopo aver iniziato la propria carriera a soli cinque anni nel gruppo di famiglia Jackson Five (nella sua autobiografia Moonwalk ricorda come venisse paragonato a Frankie Lymon), iniziò la propria attività da solista nel 1971, con il singolo Got to be there. Nel 1979 esordì definitivamente da solista, e divenne l’artista pop di maggior successo di sempre; ciò fu dovuto principalmente a Thriller (1982), tuttora l’album più venduto nella storia della musica, co-prodotto da Quincy Jones e vincitore di 8 premi Grammy. Secondo il Guinness World Records, il cantautore ha venduto oltre 750 milioni di albums, ciò lo rende di fatto l’artista solista con il maggior successo di sempre. Considerato il Re del Pop oltre che uno dei più importanti musicisti e intrattenitori nella storia dello spettacolo , in più di quarant’anni di carriera Michael Jackson ha ricevuto numerosi premi, tra cui quelli di miglior artista pop maschile del millennio ai World Music Awards del 2000 e di artista del secolo agli American Music Awards del 2002. È stato anche incluso due volte nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nel 1997 come vocalist dei Jackson Five e nel 2001 per la sua carriera solista. Nel 2002 è anche entrato nella Songwriters Hall of Fame. Nel corso della sua carriera ha vinto 13 Grammy Awards. Dal 1988 al 2005 Jackson è vissuto nel Neverland Ranch (successivamente venduto nel 2008 per la cifra di 35 milioni di dollari), in cui aveva fatto costruire un parco a tema e uno zoo per ragazzini poveri e malati terminali. A fine del 2008 alcuni organi di stampa hanno riportato la notizia che Jackson si sarebbe convertito all‘Islam , assumendo il nome di Mikaeel, notizia smentita poi dal suo avvocato londinese su altre fonti di stampa.
