Oprah Winfrey, la regina dei talk show televisivi Usa, ha annunciato che dal 2011 chiuderà col suo show per intraprendere una nuova esperienza su un canale via cavo tutto suo. Per i telespettatori americani la notizia ha avuto l’effetto che ha avuto in Italia l’annuncio della morte di Mike Bongiorno. Oprah Winfrey infatti per l’opinione pubblica americana è molto di più di una conduttrice televisiva. E’ una potenza nazionalpopolare di proporzioni sovranazionali, con influenze dirette addirittura nell’elezione di Barack Obama alla presidenza degli Stati Uniti.  Tutti gli esperti Usa di flussi elettorali sono concordi nel valutare in circa un milione i voti garantiti da Oprah al primo presidente nero della storia. Secondo stime Usa, è diventata l’afro-americana più ricca del 20/mo secolo (uomini compresi), nonché la più filantropica di tutti i tempi. Per un certo periodo di tempo è stata anche l’unica miliardaria di colore al mondo. Nella classifica annuale della rivista Forbes sulle donne più potenti al mondo, Oprah figura regolarmente, e da anni, tra le prime dieci, seconda sola a nomi come quello del Cancelliere tedesco Angela Merkel. E’ stata anche l’unica donna inserita da Time nel ristrettissimo gruppo di nomi che, secondo il settimanale, hanno avuto influenza diretta sia nel XX che nel XXI secolo: Time l’ha collocata insieme a Papa Giovanni Paolo secondo, Nelson Mandela e Bill Gates.
