Baaria, il film di Giuseppe Tornatore in lizza per la candidatura italiana all’Oscar per il miglior film straniero, è il miglior incasso del weekend cinematografico. Uscito, distribuito da Medusa, venerdì in 510 sale, è al primo posto con 2.105.181 euro d’incasso, secondo i dati Cinetel che monitorano circa l’85% del mercato. Al secondo posto un film Disney, G-Force: Superspie in missione con 1.244.291 euro. Al terzo, scalzato da Baaria dalla top list, il film d’animazione L’era glaciale 3 – L’alba dei dinosauri, distribuito da Fox, con 946.718 d’incasso ma un totale inarrivabile di 28.021.848 euro. Per Tornatore, l’incasso di Baaria nei primi tre giorni di programmazione, è il suo record personale. Nessun suo film precedente infatti, al primo weekend in sala, aveva mai raggiunto cifre di questo tipo.

La storia di una famiglia siciliana che prende le mosse dal ventennio fascista in cui Cicco, sin da bambino apertamente contestatore, è un pastore che ha la passione per la letteratura epica. Suo figlio Peppino, cresciuto durante la guerra, entrerà nelle file del Partito Comunista divenendone un esponente di spicco sul piano locale e riuscendo a sposare, nonostante la più assoluta opposizione della famiglia di lei, Mannina che diventerà madre dei loro numerosi figli che saranno comunque considerati da alcuni sempre e comunque ‘figli del comunista’.
Tornatore riprende a narrare della terra che ama, la Sicilia, e lo fa con un affresco collettivo che abbraccia numerosi decenni della storia del secolo scorso. Lo fa con quel piglio che a tratti travalica nell’enfasi che ormai gli è proprio quando torna cinematograficamente a varcare lo Stretto di Messina (e che gli procura tante critiche) ma anche con la sincera voglia di fare cinema a tutto campo. Fare cinema si traduce per lui in un omaggio consapevole e dichiarato a quanti lo hanno preceduto (qui in modo particolare a Sergio Leone ma non solo) senza però rinunciare a un proprio stile narrativo che procede per accumulo di immagini e di situazioni. È una corsa contro il tempo quella che ci viene proposta sin dall’inizio con la figura del bambino che apre il film. Corsa contro il tempo che cancella una memoria collettiva che sembra progressivamente non esistere più e che Tornatore vuole restituirci scegliendo la via della spettacolarità rivolta al pubblico più vasto possibile. C’è una scena in cui Peppino torna a Bagheria dopo essere emigrato per lavoro a Parigi. Ha ancora in mano la valigia e un gruppo di suoi conoscenti, incontrandolo, gli chiede per dove stia partendo. Nessuno di loro si è accorto della sua assenza.
Oggi ben pochi sembrano accorgersi della perdita della conoscenza di un passato recente in cui umiliazioni, lotte e parziali vittorie lasciavano segni profondi nella collettività. Segni che, come l’affresco sulla volta della chiesa, ‘dovevano’ essere cancellati. Ma ciò che al regista sembra premere ancor di più è il mostrare come il retaggio di un passato di tradizioni ormai incancrenite nella società non sia stato ancora superato nella realtà sociale siciliana e non solo. La sequenza dell’assessore all’urbanistica non vedente che si fa portare i piani regolatori in plastico e li apprezza solo dopo aver intascato l’ineludibile mazzetta è di quelle che si ricordano. Così come (pur nel caleidoscopio a tratti pensoso e a tratti decisamente macchiettistico della miriade di personaggi che attraversano la scena) resta presente, nello scorrere degli anni e delle vicende, la pessimistica sensazione di una sorta di atavica maledizione a causa della quale le uova rotte e i serpenti neri finiscono col far parte del passato, del presente e del futuro di una terra che ha bisogno di una frattura traumatica per poter liberare una volta per tutte una vitalità creativa che certo non le manca.

The story of a Sicilian family that builds on the Fascist period in which Cicco, openly contested since childhood, is a pastor who has a passion for epic literature. ZURIGO (SVIZZERA) – Il regista polacco Roman Polanski si trova in stato di fermo in Svizzera. E’ stato fermato sabato (ma la notizia si è appresa solo oggi) quando ha messo piede sul territorio elvetico sulla base di un mandato d’arresto spiccato dagli Stati Uniti nel 1978, hanno annunciato gli organizzatori del Zurich Film Festival, che sta promuovendo una retrospettiva dedicata al cineasta di origini polacche. Polanski, che doveva ricevere un premio alla carriera al festival, vive in esilio in Europa da 30 anni. E’ fuggito dagli Stati Uniti, dove è accusato di avere avuto delle relazioni sessuali con una minorenne. Polanski è «in detenzione provvisoria in attesa di estradizione». Lo riferisce un portavoce del ministero della giustizia svizzero precisando che il regista può presentare un appello sulla decisione.

LA VICENDA – Polanski, 76 anni, era fuggito dagli Usa proprio nel 1978 dopo aver confessato di aver fatto sesso con una ragazza di 13 anni. Polanski aveva a suo tempo patteggiato la condanna con il tribunale di Santa Monica a Los Angeles. Il procuratore in cambio della sua ammissione gli aveva risparmiato il carcere lasciando perdere le altre accuse, tra cui stupro con uso di stupefacenti, perversione e sodomia, che erano emerse dalla testimonianza della ragazza, che successivamente a distanza di quasi 30 anni dai fatti, aveva però perdonato il regista. Un accordo, quello fatto dalla procura di Los Angeles, che non era però piaciuto al tribunale che si apprestava ad incarcerare Polanski, che, a questo punto, aveva scelto la fuga. Nello scorso mese di dicembre gli avvocati di Polanski avevano chiesto la ricusazione dei giudici di Los Angeles. Una richiesta che era stata respinta dal giudice Peter Espinoza che aveva detto di non poter esaminare il caso fino a quando Polanski non si fosse presentato in aula, affrontando così l’arresto. Espinoza aveva dato tempo fino al 7 maggio scorso a Polanski per presentarsi. Se Polanski sarà estradato negli Stati Uniti potrebbe quindi dover affrontare un nuovo processo per stupro a Los Angeles.
Ma tutta la vita di Polanski è degna di un film. Nato a Parigi da una famiglia ebrea di origine polacca tornò nel 1937 in Polonia ma, dopo l’arrivo dei nazisti venne rinchiuso con la famiglia nel ghetto di Varsavia. Ghetto dal quale Roman fuggì, riuscendo così a salvarsi, ma dove morì invece sua madre. Sposatosi con l’attrice Sharon Tate negli Usa la scoprì cadavere incinta dell’ottavo mese uccisa dal satanista Chales Manson e dalla sua banda a Los Angeles nel 1969. Nella strage scoperta il 9 agosto del 1969, oltre alla Tate vennero uccise altre quattro persone: l’ereditiera Abigal Folger, figlia dell’imprenditore del caffè «Folger», il suo fidanzato e scrittore Wojciech Frykowsky, il parrucchiere delle star Jay Sebring e il custode della villa, Steven Parent.
Nel pomeriggio il ministro della Cultura francese, Frederic Mitterrand si è detto «stupito» per l’arresto in Svizzera di Roman Polanski e ha fatto sapere di aver discusso della questione con il presidente Nicolas Sarkozy. «Sono venuto a sapere con stupore del procedimento avviato contro Roman Polanski, un regista noto in tutto il mondo e un cittadino francese attualmente detenuto in Svizzera», ha affermato in un comunicato. Anche se ci sono cose di cui mi vergogno, ho messo tutto in archivio”.Gordon Bell non crede che il fatto di registrare tutto possa impigrirci: “Io ho sentito solo un grande senso di libertà per non dover ricordare ogni singolo particolare. In fondo, ormai la gente dimentica i numeri di telefono perché li ha memorizzati sul cellulare, e non mi sembra che la vita sia peggiorata per questo”. E aggiunge: “Dimenticare non è una caratteristica della nostra mente, ma un difetto. La tecnologia ci aiuta in questo senso”.Una grande fiducia nel progresso, con un’unica avvertenza: “Credo che le nostre memorie, anche se digitalizzate, debbano restare un fatto privato. Quello che poi decidiamo di mettere su Facebook è affare nostro e solo nostro”. Ma Bell non teme che i rapporti umani possano diventare troppo cauti, falsati dalla consapevolezza che nulla sarà dimenticato: “Certo, ci saranno cause in tribunale e leggi in materia. Ma io non sono ossessionato dalla cosa. Magari la gente della mia età lo è, ma per le nuove generazioni è un fatto naturale”.Così naturale che ormai è routine sentire di storie finite, matrimoni disfatti, amicizie bruscamente interrotte, tutto per colpa di Facebook. Magari perché quella sera in cui eravamo ufficialmente a letto con l’influenza, qualcuno ci ha taggato in una foto mentre ballavamo ubriachi sui tavoli di un locale. E non è un caso se ora, tra i consigli agli studenti, c’è quello di eliminare dalla rete foto “che la nonna non approverebbe”, pena un futuro lavorativo compromesso.

London will celebrate the 5th edition of the tattoo convention this year. Last year the organizers went all the way to change the convention and offer more to meet the most demanding needs of all the tattoo fans who look forward to this yearly appointment, which has become one of the main events in the European tattoo circuit. The numbers speak clearly: 20,000 visitors for the 2008 edition and increasing media interest, this is what makes London the number one event.

The London Tattoo Convention was covered by newspapers and TV news programs as one of the most important events of the entire cultural season in London. Myra Ellen “Tori” Amos (Newton, 22 agosto 1963) è una cantante, cantautrice e pianista statunitense. Tori Amos è considerata da critici e pubblico come una delle più importanti figure del rock al femminile degli anni novanta grazie a lavori come Little Earthquakes (1992), Under the Pink (1994) e From the Choirgirl Hotel (1998). È figlia di un reverendo metodista e di un’insegnante di origini indiane cherokee. Inizia a suonare il piano a soli due anni e a 5 anni la bambina vince una borsa di studio in uno dei conservatori più prestigiosi d’America (il Peabody Conservatory di Baltimora). Tuttavia il conflitto con il classicismo del conservatorio e con gli ideali bacchettoni della famiglia nasce dopo pochi anni dal suo ingresso nella scuola: Myra Ellen Amos era diventata una ribelle che preferiva improvvisare al piano le canzoni dei suoi miti (Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix per citarne alcuni) piuttosto che eseguire a memoria le sonate di Beethoven (come faceva di solito). In seguito Tori Amos (il soprannome Tori le verrà dato da un amico – in giapponese Tori significa uccello) inizia ad esibirsi in vari pub e ad inseguire il successo trasferendosi a Los Angeles. È proprio qui che dopo un suo concerto viene stuprata, avvenimento che la segna profondamente. A fine anni ottanta la Atlantic finalmente la nota e le fa incidere con il suo gruppo “Y Kant Tori Read” (che vedeva tra gli altri anche la presenza di Matt Sorum, futuro batterista dei Guns N’ Roses) l’omonimo album nell ‘88, questo album caratterizzato da sonorità Hard-Rock fu un enorme flop che spinse l’Atlantic ad “esiliare” l’artista temporaneamente nel Regno Unito in piccole collaborazioni. Sebbene non in patria, la Amos non si diede per vinta, anzi ritornò al suo primo amore e cioè la canzone d’autore e diede vita a Little Earthquakes, inizialmente respinto dalla sua casa discografica venne finalmente pubblicato nel 1992. Il risultato fu molto buono con 2.000.000 di copie vendute negli States e 5 milioni in tutto il mondo. In quest’album ricorrono tutti i temi principali della crescita della Amos: il difficile rapporto con la religione, e di conseguenza con il padre prete, il suo femminismo, la vicenda dello stupro, la guerra agli stereotipi. La cantautrice compie virtuosismi pianistici e vocali non indifferenti donando alle tracce una musicalità del tutto particolare e dando al rock nuove sfumature: il pianoforte è impiegato in tutte le canzoni, gli acuti strazianti sottolineano ancora di più la rabbia e il dolore della cantante. Il rapporto con il suo strumento diventa tra l’altro famoso grazie alla postura che assume solitamente mentre lo suona nei suoi concerti dal vivo: a gambe divaricate e la testa china indietro, quasi come se stesse avendo un rapporto sessuale. Nel 1992 viene pubblicato l’EP di Crucify che contiene 4 brani: la versione “remix” di Crucify, un altro brano estratto dal precedente disco (Winter) e 3 cover: Smells Like Teen Spirit dei Nirvana, Thank You dei Led Zeppelin e Angie dei Rolling Stones. Il 1994 è l’anno della rivelazione per Tori Amos: il suo secondo album Under the Pink la consacra come una delle figure femminili principali della musica rock degli anni novanta. Il nuovo album, lanciato dal singolo Cornflake Girl, vende oltre tre milioni di copie solo negli Stati Uniti e 8 milioni in tutto il mondo. La cantautrice si concentra nuovamente nel conflitto Chiesa-Libertà nella canzone God, ma questa volta sposta la sua attenzione sull’animo femminile, sulle relazioni che intercorrono tra le donne. Nel 1995 collabora alla colonna sonora di Higher Learning, con una nuova canzone, Butterfly, e l’ennesima cover, Losing my religion dei R.E.M.. Nel 1996 Tori Amos incide in Irlanda Boys for Pele, chiamato così in onore di Pele, dea hawaiana del fuoco. Nelle 18 tracce che costituiscono l’album, l’artista suona, oltre che il suo fedele pianoforte Bosendorfer, il clavicembalo. Abbiamo così modo di ascoltare canzoni in cui questo strumento assume quasi la sonorità di una chitarra elettrica, come ad esempio in Professional Widow un brano rock dedicato a Courtney Love (moglie di Kurt Cobain, leader dei Nirvana) oramai diventata appunto una vedova di professione. Ricordiamo che con un remix dance di questa canzone, curato da Armand van Helden, la Amos diventa anche un idolo delle discoteche. Le altre tracce sono caratterizzate da una sonorità cupa, quasi spettrale che portano Tori Amos comporre canzoni come Talula o Way Down. Il disco replica il successo del precedente con 6 milioni di copie vendute in tutto il mondo. Due anni più tardi la cantautrice della North Carolina pubblica From the Choirgirl Hotel, un album concepito dopo un aborto naturale, episodio vissuto in maniera sentitamente drammatica da Tori Amos come ci fa capire nel brano rock di apertura Spark. In questo album la Amos affronta nuove sonorità completamente differenti dalle sue opere precedenti, come si può ascoltare in Raspberry Swirl, nella quale il pianoforte diventa addirittura uno strumento con cui suonare musica dance. Vi sono tuttavia anche brani più dolci come Jackie’s Strenght, che narra delle vicende di Jacqueline Kennedy. Ancora una volta il disco riscuote un grande successo sia in patria che all’estero, vendendo più di 5 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo. Solo un anno dopo assistiamo alla pubblicazione di To Venus and back, un doppio album comprendente una strepitosa performance dal vivo. Il disco inedito può essere considerata come la naturale evoluzione di From the Choirgirl Hotel: l’utilizzo innovativo dell’elettronica rende totalmente nuovo il sound di Tori, permettendole di esprimere ulteriori sfaccettature della sua anima poliedrica. Il progetto, molto ambizioso e particolare, non ottiene lo stesso successo dei precedenti lavori della Amos, ma riesce comunque a vendere 3 milioni di copie. Nel 2001 la dea del rock (così la chiamano i suoi fan) si cimenta in un’opera ambiziosa: Strange Little Girls, un album composto di sole cover, 12 in totale. Le canzoni originali erano tutte cantate da uomini e trattano tutte lo stesso argomento: le donne. La Amos dà un’interpretazione completamente diversa di ogni canzone e così 12 strane piccole ragazze (anzi 13, due sono gemelle) prendono vita; canzoni come quelle di Neil Young, degli Stranglers, di Tom Waits, di Eminem, degli Slayer e dei Beatles vengono completamente stravolte dalla cantautrice che questa volta suona oltre il pianoforte, il piano elettrico wurlitzer. Tuttavia l’opera non raggiunge il successo sperato: l’album si presenta alquanto noioso e scialbo. Tori Amos sembra quasi esagerare con gli acuti prolungati che caratterizzano alcune delle canzoni. Restano insomma da citare sole due delle strane piccole ragazze: Strange Little Girl e Heart of Gold. Nonostante un buon inizio (debutta al quarto posto negli Stati Uniti) non riesce a replicare il successo dei precedenti lavori. I 2 milioni di copie vendute non sono considerati dalla Atlantic un risultato soddisfacente e decide di licenziare la Amos, la quale decide di passa alla casa discografica Epic.Per la Atlantic pubblicherà nel 2003 Tales of a Librarian, un’”antologia musicale” come lo definisce l’artista stessa, ossia un album con una raccolta dei suoi successi. Così, dopo un matrimonio con il suo tecnico del suono Mark Hawley e l’inizio di una gravidanza, Tori Amos compone nel 2002 Scarlet’s Walk, un album romanzato che narra le vicende appunto di Scarlet (Rossella, in onore di Rossella O’Hara del romanzo Via col vento). Un album molto più tranquillo rispetto agli altri, un album in cui la cantautrice di Newton si immedesima completamente in Scarlet raccontandone le vicende, un album politico (Tori Amos si dichiarò sinceramente colpita dagli avvenimenti dell’11 settembre 2001), un album che tratta, come di consueto, la religione. Qui l’artista riesce a donarci melodie più semplici da seguire grazie ad un approccio completamente diverso con il piano elettrico wurlitzer, strumento che accompagna dolcemente la voce della Amos questa volta più pacata e riflessiva. Scarlet’s Walk rappresenta uno dei capitoli più importanti e artisticamente maturi della cantante; come tutto ciò composto da Tori Amos, anche Scarlet’s Walk può inizialmente disorientare, non trattandosi di un “easy” album. Nelle classifiche il disco riscuote un discreto successo vendendo 2 milioni di copie, ma gli anni d’oro per la Amos sembrano definitivamente passati. Tre anni dopo, in seguito alla nascita della figlia Natashya, Tori Amos pubblica The Beekeeper, nel quale vengono affrontati molteplici argomenti che l’artista racchiude in piccoli nuclei tematici, appunti simili alle celle di un favo. In quest’album è presente anche un duetto con il cantautore irlandese Damien Rice. The Beekeeper, a detta di Tori Amos, è il frutto di enormi cambiamenti nella sua vita privata (la nascita della figlia) e di una maggiore pace con sé stessa e col passato non sempre felice. The Beekeeper presenta brani più orecchiabili e radiofonici, senza necessariamente sentire una mancanza di qualità. Argomento particolarmente importante dell’album è la religione, soprattutto la questione delle due Marie e la concezione limitata che si ha di queste due figure. Ancora una volta il disco riesce a vendere piuttosto bene, superando i 2 milioni di copie. Nel 2005 Tori Amos è stata impegnata nel suo settimo tour mondiale Original Sinsuality. Tra l’agosto e l’autunno 2005 sono stati pubblicati sei bootleg live. Il 1º maggio 2007 viene pubblicato l’album, registrato in Cornovaglia come il precedente, American Doll Posse. Secondo le dichiarazioni della cantante stessa e della casa discografica, il nuovo album di Tori, coprodotto dalla poetessa americana Erzsebet Beck, si presenta con uno stampo fortemente rock, presentando melodie più forti e meno soft. Affronta come sempre temi forti come la religione e la politica. Ha destato molto scalpore la fotografia rilasciata durante il comunicato del nuovo album: la Amos si presenta con un nuovo taglio di capelli, in una mano stringe la Bibbia e sull’altra porta la scritta shame, vergogna in inglese, mentre scorre del sangue mestruale lungo una gamba. Il disco vende un milione e mezzo di copie in tutto il mondo, vendendo molto bene negli USA, ma non altrettanto in Gran Bretagna.L’artista vive in Inghilterra. Tori Amos è considerata da critici e pubblico come una delle più importanti figure del rock degli anni novanta: la sua influenza si nota ampiamente in alcuni nuovi artisti emergenti come Rufus Wainwright, The Dresden Dolls o Fiona Apple. L’album, registrato nello studio del marito Mark Hawley in Cornovaglia, esplora nuove tematiche, come la concezione di potere nei rapporti interpersonali, in particolare tra le donne, il peccato, la religione, la famiglia e il modo in cui definirle. I brani dell’album, spiega l’artista, sono stati concepiti in un momento molto particolare, in cui la società è stata costretta ad affrontare una profonda crisi economica. Tori Amos ha voluto preparare, inoltre, una versione deluxe dell’album a tiratura limitata, accompagnando ad ogni canzone delle “visualetts”, che provvedano a narrare visivamente il senso del testo.
